Of this century, I think Twitter. It sounds a bit rubbish but seeing how the green revolution in Iran was shared with the world, how its used to spread hope after tragedies, and memes about cats obviously, I think the impact of twitter is still being felt. Connecting people all over the world and allowing you to cyber stalk your favourite celebrities.

Kindle. Because you can have a library in your pocket, and you can read anywhere, even in bright sunlight as the screen is non-reflective.

Wow, hard one. Time is usually the best test… but I’d have to go with a combo of the above (cheap, trick I know)… I’d say the smart phone – just think – we can face-time someone on the other side of the world, access the world’s biggest library, see a high-res map of the whole world, watch live sports, movies or music videos, we can record and edit audio and video, broadcast our most pointless thoughts to billions people – and even use it as a make-up mirror.

There’s an ad for a store called Radio Shack that really drives the point home – (radio shack is the American version of Maplins) – every single thing in the ad is now incorporated into the typical phone – here it is, from the year I finished school:

Of course this is really not a single invention, but really, most inventions are like that – weather it’s the steam engine or the light bulb, it took a lot of steps to happen, a lot of clever people who decided to do something cool, rather than watch another episode of iCarly.
