• Question: how long did it take to train to be an engineer

      5 years at university (but there are easier types of engineering that don’t take as long).

      I spent 5 years at uni full time, before I became an engineer. I kept studying part time though so I guess it would depend on how far you want to go.

      Well, it takes a lifetime – I subscribe to the Japanese concept called ‘kaizen’, which means ‘continuous improvement’ and was made famous when Toyota blew the wheels off american car makers in the 80’s.
      But seriously, I did a 4 year honours degree and then a 2 year master’s degree before I started working ‘for real’.
